Twenty five male members of staff from WCA Chartered Accountants have been taking on the Movember challenge this month as part of an effort to raise awareness and funds for men’s health initiatives through the Movember Foundation.
Moustache growth varies amongst the participants, but, it’s been clear to see a lot more facial hair on display than usual.But for the team members, the challenge has been much more than just a case of moustache growing rivalry.
“I’m from a family of men who don’t talk about their health problems and die young. Enough is enough, it is time to change the face of men’s health and stop men dying young,” Team WCA Captain, Thomas Gough said.
According to the Movember Foundation the state of men’s health globally is at a crisis point. Half a million men are taking their own life every year, the equivalent of one suicide every minute. When it comes to biological health, men die on average six years earlier than women. Prostate cancer rates are set to double in the next 15 years, and testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50 years.
“Our staff pride themselves on being professional yet personal, and the issue of men’s health is a deeply personal one,” Accredited Financial Planner Tony Bazzana said. “We’ve taken on the Movember challenge as a way to show our staff, clients and community that it’s ok for men to speak up about personal and mental health issues. It’s time to break the silence,” Mr Bazzana said.
